California based social network company, Facebook is eyeing to launch a home video chat product named Portal in the month of May that will compete with Amazon’s Echo Show and Google Assistant-enabled touchscreens. According to a report by online news network Cheddar, Portal will be the first finished hardware product from Facebook’s secretive Building 8 lab and may see the light of the day in May. This is the time when Facebook will organize its annual F8 developer conference.
It was also mentioned that Facebook plans to sell the device and priced at $499 (roughly Rs. 31,800) through pop-up stores as well as online and will keep the competitive price in mind and this range can vary from country to country. Portal is seen as a competition to Amazon Echo Show and four Google Assistant-powered smart speakers that were launched recently in CES 2018.
The four new smart displays include devices created by Sony, Samsung-owned JBL, LG, and Lenovo. These devices include a touchscreen that can be used to display visual information to accompany its responses, also play video and conduct video calls. Portal will be equipped with a wide-angle lens that is capable of recognizing individual faces and link them with their Facebook accounts. The social media giant also intends to let Portal access outside streaming services such as Spotify and Netflix to increase the growth and to provide better support and services to all the video streaming platforms, it also planning to includes other platforms after seeing the result from existing one.
